Andrea Garnett was the Commanding Officer of the USS Jeffrey Michener and former Chief Engineer of the USS Nathan James. In the Season 1 episode "Welcome to Gitmo," she is temporarily incapacitated after suffering a shrapnel wound from an Al-Qaeda rocket-propelled grenade.
Garnett is one of the six people exposed to the Red Flu during the human trials of the vaccine conducted by Dr. Scott.
When the Nathan James returned to Norfolk in "It's Not A Rumor," Garnett returns to her house to search for her family. After discovering that they were not at home, she stopped by the local hospital to check the records. It was there that she discovered that her husband Bill and daughter Lily had succumbed to the Red Flu.
After the events of the season 2 finale "A More Perfect Union," LCDR Garnett is promoted to the rank of Commander and becomes the Executive Officer of USS Nathan James.
After season 3, Meylan replaced Garnett as the Executive Officer of the Nathan James while Garnett continues to serve the Navy. She helps the crew of the Nathan James by finding another plane in Tel Aviv for them to use to transport the seeds after their first plane is blown up. (“Tempest”) Garnett later contacted the Nathan James to give them intel on where Dr. Paul Vellek was flying his Nostos-infected plants out of, enabling the crew to intercept and stop Vellek's foces. (“Endgame”)
Sometime before the events of Season 5, CDR Garnett was promoted to the rank of Captain, and was given command of the newly commissioned vessel, Jeffrey Michener. She was killed during the Fleet Week attack.
In the series finale, CAPT Garnett is one of the characters with whom Tom had served (most of them deceased,) who appears in his hallucination as he is drowning, after Nathan James sinks ramming Gustavo's Battleship in order to end the war with Gran Colombia. Tom views, and then is part of, an award ceremony for him, which also serves as a change of command ceremony for Nathan James. When President Michener asks Tom if he is ready to be relieved (as commanding officer,) Tom hesitates and wonders aloud who he is passing responsibility onto. Andrea is one of the sailors in the audience for the ceremony (who are also Tom's close friends and allies,) stand and declare that they have the watch, allowing Tom to finally achieve peace and be able to mentally and emotionally let go of both Nathan James, and of the burdens he has carried around since the plague began, secure in the knowledge that others will always be there.
Ultimately, Tom decides to keep fighting, swim to the surface, and live.
