PO Carl Nishioka is a Petty Officer First Class and the Chief Fire Control-man on board the USS Nathan James.
Events of The Last Ship[]
Season 3[]
During the rescue of the captured crewmembers, Nishioka pilots a UAV to give Vulture Team cover until it's shot down by a Chinese warship on the other side of the island. Nishioka helps to review the footage and determine what happened. With an overwhelming number of MSS agents attacking Chandler, Slattery and Danny Green, Carlton Burk has Nishioka target Jesse's helicopter with Nathan James 5in gun as a way of aiming the shot at the enemy forces. Nishioka has trouble locking on, forcing Jesse and Burk to have him fire at them before they dive the helicopter. The tactic works and all of the Chinese forces are eliminated by Nishioka's shot with the 5in gun. (“Dog Day”)
During the mission to destroy the CNS Sea Dragon, Nishioka manages to shoot down several of the missiles coming from the Chinese land battery and then to destroy both the battery and the enemy ship with a simultaneous missile attack. (“Paradise”)
Season 4[]
When the ship is disabled by an IED off of the Pillars of Hercules, Kara Green has the nervous Nishioka man the CWIS to shoot down incoming missiles. Kara does her best to reassure the young man, eventually ordering him to just fire without waiting for her orders if a missile is coming. After fire control is fully restored, Nishioka takes out the mobile missile battery with the ship's 5in gun. (“The Pillars of Hercules”)
During the battle with the Greek fleet, Nishioka monitors the missile fired by the HS Proteus that sinks a small fishing boat and he is able to use its trajectory to locate the Proteus's position. However, he is unable to determine the location of the HS Nereus where it is hiding amongst the fishing boats. After Nereus is taken out with a torpedo, Nishioka shoots down the return fire from Proteus, but has his own missile attack shot down as well. Nishioka warns Chandler that they only have eight missiles left and Slattery has him launch chaff and two missiles targeting the enemy ship fore and aft. While Proteus is busy shooting down those missiles, Slattery has Nishioka fire a third right down the middle. Nishioka successfully hits Proteus near its bridge with the missile, sinking it and killing Giorgio Vellek. (“Detect, Deceive, Destroy”)
Nishioka shoots down one of the planes carrying Dr. Paul Vellek's Nostos-infected plants and then the HS Triton's answering missile. Later, Nishioka joins a makeshift boarding party for the Triton when Nathan James Vulture team is too far away to help. During the mission, he teams up with Kathleen Nolan. (“Endgame”)
