Doctor Julius Hunter is the chief paleomicrobiologist of the CDC lab in Florida, who reconnected with his student Rachel Scott after the fall of Amy Granderson and her private army.

Biography[]

Julius worked as the professor of Molecular Microbiology & Immunology at Yale University's School of Biological & Biomedical Sciences. Rachel Scott was personally mentored by Julius while she was studying there to earn her PhDs. When the Red Flu started infecting people in the US, Julius was put in charge of a CDC lab in Palm Coast, Florida with six other scientists trying to find a cure for months without any contact with the outside world.

Events of The Last Ship[]

When the Nathan James starts contacting the labs provided by the Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, Julius reaches out to them to talk to Rachel. Rachel expresses excitement at hearing her mentor's voice and tells him that they have the cure for the Red Flu. Julius and Rachel then video chat where Julius tells Rachel they haven't had any contact from Washington and despite the end of the world he is holding up okay. Rachel asks if Julius heard anything from her boyfriend Michael and Julius tells her he reached out to him months ago from China when he was covering the Red Flu story. Julius encouraged him to leave but he wouldn't and has heard anything sense, implying he is dead. (“It's Not a Rumor”)

It is revealed Julius sent the Nathan James a video message while they were battling the Achilles. Julius tells Rachel that the facility he is at is under attack by the Immunes and discovered a new way to distribute the cure by turning it from a liquid to a powder. He tells Rachel that he down the research off the server for her to find when the Immunes led by Kevin MacDowell suddenly barge and steal the locations of the labs from Julius and MacDowell shoot Julius in the head. (“Long Day's Journey”)

Comm. Slattery plays Julius' video message to Rachel for President Jeffrey Michener in an effort to show that the Immunes are not as noble as Michener thinks they are. (“Safe Zone”)

Legacy[]

His research helped Rachel develop other versions of the cure and his original idea to spread the cure in a powder like form proved instrumental in the US Navy winning the American people's trust back after the Immunes had all but destroyed it. After Kevin MacDowell infected a large group of people while disguised as US Naval officers, the Nathan James crew was able to spread the powder version of the cure over the entire crowd, immunizing all of them. In a sense of poetic justice, Hunter's work ruined the plans and led to the downfall of the man that killed him.
