Kyoko is the pregnant wife of Takehaya. Just like many people in Japan, the cure proved ineffective. She and her husband were taking blood from Slattery and his captured crew to keep from dying from the Red Flu, revealed to be because Peng Wu was spreading an anti-cure across Asia to render the cure ineffective.
Events of The Last Ship[]
Takehaya takes Slattery and Rios to see Kyoko when she gets sick and the blood transfusions aren't working. Rios diagnoses Kyoko to have Malaria in addition to the Red Flu and recommends treating her with antibiotics. While Takehaya sits by Kyoko's side as she is being treated. After the Nathan James clears the minefield, Kyoko tells Takehaya they can't raise their child on this island and Takehaya reassures her that he has a plan for the future of their child. (“Minefield”)
When Garnett approaches Kyoko after sending a signal to the Nathan James, she claims to Takehaya that she was helping Kyoko move boxes. When Takehaya asks her if this is true, Kyoko nods her head and Takehaya sends Garnett away while he tells Kyoko that she shouldn't be out of bed.
After the Nathan James discovers their location, Kyoko hides in a underground tunnel below the camp with Toshiro, Rios, Miller, and a Japanese guard. When Kyoko nearly faints, Rios and Toshiro argue over her treatment which ends with Rios reluctantly giving Kyoko a transfusion of Miller's blood. Toshiro tells it is time to leave and helps her up while the guard grabs some supplies. She then witnesses Rios and Miller kill both and escape. When Takehaya takes Miller hostage, Kyoko pleads with Takehaya to stop, saying it is the only way to protect their child. She slowly approaches him and gently has him lower and drop his gun, convincing him to surrender. (“Dog Day”)
Kyoko is treated onboard the Nathan James for both Malaria and the Red Flu as they try to figure out why the cure didn't work. Sasha Cooper talks with Kyoko as they test her blood and Kyoko tells her the baby will be named Kaito after his father and asks Sasha what it means in English and Sasha replies "sailor". Sasha visits Kyoko again when Kyoko starts rambling about a green mist that covered Japan's night sky as the baby starts to go in distress. Kyoko delivers the baby and hugs him before Kaito is taken to see his father Takehaya. (“In the Dark”)
Kyoko holds Kaito as she thanks Danny Green for her life and the life of her son Kaito while Sasha translates for her. Kyoko goes onto to say she hasn't prayed since she was a child and now she will pray everyday for the doctors and for Green as she hands Green Kaito for him to hold and says he is a natural. After seeing the green mist sprayed from a smuggled missile recovered by the Nathan James, Sasha realizes that this is what Kyoko had been talking about. The mist proves to be an anti-cure spread by Peng Wu across the countries of Asia in order to render the cure to the Red Flu ineffective. While Kaito is safe from the virus, both Takehaya and Kyoko are doomed to die of it because of the anti-cure's effects. (“Sea Change”)
Kyoko is seen being treated with Kaito while Slattery talks with her husband Takehaya after Takehaya requested to speak to him. (“Paradise”)
After Peng is killed and the last of his anti-cure missiles are destroyed, Kyoko and Kaito are seen leaving the Nathan James to live the rest of their lives in Japan. Before leaving, Kyoko thanks Chandler for everything he has done for her family and country and tells them she wants to die with her husband on Japanese soil with what left of her people taking care of Kaito when they are gone. (“Legacy”)
