USS Hayward (DDG-157) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer of the United States Navy, under the command of Captain Joseph Meylan. The Hayward is one of only three ships active in the U.S. Navy along with the Nathan James and Shackleton.

Events of The Last Ship[]

In the Season 3 episode "Paradise," Hayward meets up with the Nathan James and Shackleton at a predetermined location in order to stop a Chinese destroyer from delivering missiles containing the "green mist" to Korea. As the ships reached the location, they are attacked by a barrage of land based missiles. Hayward receieved several direct hits from the missiles, and was so badly damaged that the order was given to abandon ship. Hayward's Captain Meylan, who survived the attack, tells Captain Chandler that 85 of his sailors are dead and many more are missing.

In "Scuttle," the crew has removed what can be salvaged from the still-afloat but sinking Hayward, including the ship's bridge windows which are used to replace the blown-out ones on the Nathan James. With the ship damaged beyond repair, teams from Nathan James plant scuttling charges onboard in places to ensure maximum damage and that no enemy forces can recover anything of use. With Meylan unable to bring himself to activate the detonator, Chandler scuttles the Hayward himself, witnessed from the bridge of Nathan James by Chandler, Slattery and the grief-stricken Meyland who had witnessed his ship being built. After receiving orders to arrest Captain Chandler and relieve Mike Slattery of command, Meylan replaces much of the Nathan James bridge crew with his own people and uses some of his officers for Chandler's court-martial. At one point, tensions erupt between the two crews due to a fight between Eric Miller and former Nathan James crewman Michael O'Connor, who had been reassigned to the Hayward, turning into an all-out brawl. After the Nathan James crew seizes control back, they sequester Meylan and his officers.

In "Legacy," Meylan takes part in the planning session for the attack on Peng Wu and offers his help in anyway he can, stating that the one thing he can't explain to his crew is why he did nothing as the Nathan James crew risked their lives. Chandler accepts Meylan's help and subsequently the Hayward crew integrates with the Nathan James crew, particularly after Meylan realizes that Chandler was right about elements in the US government plotting their demise.
