USS Shackleton (DDG-162) was an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer of the United States Navy, under the command of Captain Hicks. The Shackleton is one of only three ships active in the U.S. Navy along with the Nathan James and Hayward.

Events of The Last Ship Edit

In the episode "Paradise," Shackleton meets the Nathan James and Hayward at a selected location in order to prevent a Chinese destroyer from delivering missiles containing the "green mist" to Korea. As the three ships converge on the Chinese vessel, they are attacked by a barrage of Chinese land-based missiles. Shackleton receives multiple missile hits, and is subsequently lost with all hands.

According to the real life technical features for a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke destroyer, the Shackleton has a length of 509 ft (155m), beam of 66 ft (20m) and draft of 30.5 ft (9.3m). It includes two shafts driving two five bladed reversible controllable-pitch propellers and four turbines each generating 10,000 (75-megawatt). It is able to attain a speed of more than 30 knots (or more than 55 km/h) at full throttle.

Like the Nathan James and Hayward, the Shackleton may also hold a SH-60 Seahawk ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) Helicopter onboard.
