The United States of America (USA), commonly called the United States (US or U.S.) and America, is a federal constitutional republic consisting of fifty states, a federal district, and a collection of territories.

Events of The Last Ship[]

As the Red Flu started to spread, the Federal Government took action and declared a state of emergency, however the intensity and aggressivity of the pathogen made the United States fall under martial law with the U.S. Military overseeing public safety and health procedures.

Shortly after, the entire nation was overrun by the virus and federal departments ceased to function, while the U.S. Military was still active trying to find an active solution. Eventually, the President of the United States and his deputy died, and Speaker of the House of Representatives Kelly Geller took the oath of office in a Humvee via call. She was then escorted to the Presidential Bunker however the virus found its way inside and killed everyone inside.

In the Season 2 finale "A More Perfect Union," former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Jeffrey Michener is sworn in as President of the United States in the city of St. Louis. He declares St. Louis to be the new capital of the United States, and establishes a provisional federal government there.

Going into Season 3, the executive branch of the federal government is gradually reestablished. The President had nearly unchallenged authority at the federal level. The United States has started to rebuild with the rule of law, electricity and currency being restored to a degree in some areas and international relations being reestablished with surviving nations in South East Asia and South America. The Supply Ministry is established in order to distribute ration books throughout the United States, now reconstituted into large administrative regions (i.e. South West). The aforementioned regions elected a single governor to handle internal affairs and advise the President. The regions would presumably be dissolved after new elections to Congress took place.

In the Season 3 episode "Paradise", White House Chief of Staff Allison Shaw and four out of the five regional leaders stage a quiet coup d'état against President Howard Oliver, stripping him of his powers and reducing to a mere figurehead. Their goal is to defederalize all government programs and to allow the five regions to isolate and govern themselves without reporting to a central government.

In the season 3 finale "Don't Look Back", the regional leaders are all either arrested or killed as the US Military launches counter-coup operations in Texarkana, New York, Des Moines and St. Louis with the White House being stormed by loyal forces and his presidency restored.

In Season 5 The United States has reestablished the US Congress and commissioned a new Navy fleet. After the air raid on the Mayport Naval Station the President asked Congress for a declaration of war against the Gran Colombian Empire. In "Commitment," the Gran Colombian Army surrendered to US forces and its leader, Gustavo Barros, was killed by Danny Green and Sasha Cooper when he refused to surrender to anyone but Tom Chandler.

The United States of America, fully recovered, began to set out a clear vision of development for the future along with the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation, both restored after reclamation wars.
