The United States of America (USA), commonly called the United States (US or U.S.) and America, is a federal constitutional republic consisting of fifty states, a federal district, and a collection of territories.

Events of The Last Ship Edit

The United States government largely collapsed during the Red Flu pandemic with the President, Vice President, Speaker of the House and all but one member of the Cabinet dying along with 80% of the human population. The armed forces suffered huge manpower losses but did not completely collapse and remained operational to some extent even after the collapse of the civilian government. Remnants of all branches of the U.S. Military regrouped at Naval Station Norfolk.

In the Season 2 finale "A More Perfect Union," former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Jeffrey Michener is sworn in as President of the United States in the city of St. Louis. He declares St. Louis to be the new capital of the United States, and establishes a provisional federal government there.

The executive branch of the U.S. Government is gradually reestablished going into Season 3 with the State Department back up and running now renamed as the Department of Foreign Affairs. The United States has started to rebuild with the rule of law, electricity and currency being restored to a degree in some areas and international relations being reestablished with surviving nations in South East Asia and South America. The Supply Ministry is established in order to distribute ration books throughout the United States, now reconstituted into large administrative regions (i.e. South West).

In the Season 3 episode "Paradise", White House Chief of Staff Allison Shaw and four out of the five regional leaders stage a quiet coup d'état against President Howard Oliver, stripping him of his powers and reducing to a mere figurehead. Their goal is to defederalize all government programs and to allow the five regions to isolate and govern themselves without reporting to a central government.

After Kara Green and Tex Nolan rescue President Oliver from the St. Louis White House in the episode "Legacy," Allison Shaw and the regional leaders announce the suspension of the Constitution of the United States and the federal government, allowing them to achieve their goal of independence for the regions.

In the season 3 finale "Don't Look Back", the regional leaders are all either arrested or killed as the US Navy launches operations in Texarkana, New York, Des Moines and St Louis with the White House being liberated and Howard Oliver reassuming his role as President.

In Season 5 The United States has reestablished the US Congress and commissioned a new Navy fleet. After the air raid on the Mayport Naval Station the President asked Congress for a declaration of war against the Gran Colombian Empire. In "Commitment," the Gran Colombian Army surrendered to US forces and its leader, Gustavo Barros, was killed by Danny Green and Sasha Cooper when he refused to surrender to anyone but Tom Chandler.
